Academic Nurse Educator Certification

Eligibility requirements vary for each certification. Additional certifications exist; this is not an exhaustive list.

National League for Nursing (NLN)
Certification for Nurse Educators (CNE) criteria:
1. RN licensure
2. Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing
3. Commitment to nurse education (at least one of the following):

  • Two or more years employment as academic nursing faculty
  • Post-Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education
  • Emphasis in Nursing Education within MS or PhD
  • Completion of 9 or more credits of graduate-level education courses

Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Certifications
Practitioner and clinical specialty certifications are highly desirable for academic nurse educators; however, clinical specialty certification without a master’s or doctoral degree in Nursing is typically insufficient to be an academic faculty member in professional nursing programs.

See the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) for several available specialty certifications. Additional nursing specialty certifications exist.
